Flutter was shown at the Santa Cruz Film Festival. Flutter Giles Borg 2011
John’s a gambler. His life is a sequence of highs and lows. He wins some, he loses some. Things keep ticking over as normal until the night he places his bets with Stan, the new bookie at the dog races. Stan’s different. She’s not another crumpled old suit but young and charismatic, beautiful and mysterious.
John takes a chance with Stan, and ends up winning a small fortune. The only problem is now he’s hooked. And, it’s not just John who’s addicted, but his friends Adrian and Wagner as well. Their early wins turn into bigger and bigger losses until they no longer have any money with which to bet. Stan then suggests they try something different: betting on themselves. One humiliating gamble leads to another ultimately leading to tragic consequences. With the stakes growing ever higher, John starts to get the feeling there is more to Stan than meets the eye. Created in the tradition of great British crime films, Flutter contains undeniable shades of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
With its killer soundtrack, kooky characters and gritty feel, it delivers the pace of a caper combined with real emotional depth; we shudder at the depravity, laugh at the jokes and scream at the screen as we watch John make one questionable choice after another.
