Rain puts early end to Hobbit
The Hobbit film crew are pulling out of the Nelson region due to lousy weather, but it is highly likely they will return next year.
Production company 3 Foot 7 publicist Ceris Price said it was too wet for filming, so they were leaving.
"We were relying on beautiful weather. It's just a real shame, because everybody loves Nelson. We have been having a lovely time here, but the weather in the last couple of days has made it very difficult. It's time for a Christmas break," she said.
Ms Price said it was "extremely probable" they would return to film at Canaan Downs next year.
The film crew packed up and left the Pelorus Bridge campground in a hurry last night. Campground manager Stephanie Neal said a team of workers were removing a scaffolding structure – a walking platform – from near the Pelorus River this morning.
"They were supposed to be here until Saturday, but they have pulled the plug because it's so wet. They certainly wouldn't be able to film in this weather," she said.
"It's raining, the rivers are up and it's dirty brown. We could be in for another big flood."
Campers were evacuated from the campground's 35-site back camp on December 28 last year as heavy rain deluged the site. "It's looking like it's starting all over again," she said.
Ms Neal said The Hobbit film crew lost 20 wooden planks down the river when it rained last week.
At the Milton Chalet Motel in Nelson, 14 crew members were checking out today. Ad Feedback
- The Nelson Mail www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/6137684/Rain-puts-early-end-to-Hobbitvia @lukeevans_News New details revealed for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
With a year to go until hugely anticipated Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is out in cinemas, new details about the Peter Jackson movie have been released.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel has been split into two films – with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey released on December 14 2012, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again slated for release in December 2012.
Warner Bros. Pictures has made a new one-page synopsis available for the fans and others also intrigued. The synopsis is as follows:
“From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of two films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The second film will be The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from The Lord of the Rings movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.
The screenplays for both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Ken Kamins, Toby Emmerich and Zane Weiner, with Boyens serving as co-producer.
Under Jackson’s direction, both movies are being shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.
Among the creative behind-the-scenes team returning to Jackson’s crew are director of photography Andrew Lesnie, production designer Dan Hennah, conceptual designers Alan Lee and John Howe, composer Howard Shore and make-up and hair designer Peter King. The costumes are designed by Ann Maskrey and Richard Taylor. The score is being composed by Howard Shore.
Taylor is also overseeing the design and production of weaponry, armour and prosthetics which are once again being made by the award-winning Weta Workshop. Weta Digital take on the visual effects for both films, led by the film’s visual effects supervisor, Joe Letteri. Post production will take place at Park Road Post Production in Wellington.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing, being handled by MGM.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released beginning December 14, 2012. The second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is slated for release the following year, beginning December 13, 2013." entertainment.stv.tv/film/287732-new-details-revealed-for-the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey/via @calexora & @tpotefan

New WB press release and a mystery bit of casting
An official WB press release came out today that includes some Plot detail. One new Cast member is in the list, a John Bell, who appears to be about 10 years old or so. No official listing on IMDB yet for this casting, so no idea if he is Bain or Estel, or some other youngster. I’m including a link to an interview with the young actor under the press release.
From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of two films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The second film will be The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

What is next for John Bell? I had heard you have been cast in The Hobbit. Is that true and can you tell us anything about the character you will be playing? And are you a Middle Earth/Tolkien fan?
I have just finished filming a small part in the film Battleship in Louisiana and I am about to start another project that I can’t say anything about just yet. I have been offered a part in The Hobbit and the character I play is very different from Tomás. My character is confident and brave and ready to do battle if required even though he is still a boy. I have read the Hobbit and loved it and I love Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films so you can definitely call me a fan.

EXCLUSIVE: Hobbit Trailer Details Revealed
Thanks to Ringer Duff Man for sending in this exclusive summary of what we can expect to see in the upcoming ‘Hobbit’ trailer. Read on for his report. Warning: Spoilers lie ahead.
Starts with Bilbo (Ian Holm!!) talking to Frodo (Elijah Wood) at Bag End about his “adventures” and how he didn’t tell him everything.
Shows Gandalf making his proposition to young Bilbo and introducing all 13 dwarves by name as it cuts to each.
Bilbo protests of course, because Bagginses belong at Bag End.
The “big” scene is the dwarves, led by Thorin, singing a long slow song. I didn’t catch all the words, but I have to assume it’s from the book. Very ominous tone.
Lots of images in a montage, of travelling and fighting. I think I saw some goblins, and maybe some troll legs, but it went by quickly. Some creepy ruins–looked almost like Moria, but without the majesty. I wasn’t sure if it was underground in the goblin stronghold or something else. Dol Guldur?
There is definitely Rivendell and the shards of Narsil and maybe Elrond, but again, I can’t be sure.
No Smaug at all. No hints at plot, really. No Beorn that I could see. Not even any spiders, although I think I saw some creepy woods. One of my favorite scenes was the dwarves cleaning Bilbo’s dishes after dinner. Expect some acrobatic dishes
Thorin is depicted as a bit callous–he tells Gandalf he can’t guarantee his safe return. Gandalf agrees, and Thorin adds “Nor will I be responsible for his fate.”
It ends with Gandalf saying to Bilbo that if he returns, he may be changed–this is in voiceover while we see THE RING, and Gollum climbing behind Bilbo in the cave.
Can’t wait to see it again!
We agree with you there Duff Man! We can hardly contain the excitement of seeing this realized on screen…let the countdown to Tintin continue… www.theonering.net/torwp/2011/12/15/51412-exclusive-hobbit-trailer-details-revealed/via Twitter

Exclusive: Stephen Fry on 'The Hobbit': 'Peter Jackson had me eating testicles'
Stephen Fry has said that he plays a "very gross figure" in Peter Jackson's upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit.
The actor told Digital Spy that his Master of Laketown in the two-part film recalls Jackson's earlier work in movies like Bad Taste and Brain Dead.
"He was a shlock, gore director of the highest quality and wit," Fry said of Jackson. "My character is an opportunity for sheer grossness.
"He had me eating testicles... gross appetites. I mustn't give too much away but I've got a bald cap and then on top of that a really bad combover wig and this wispy moustache and wispy beard and horrible blotchy skin and disgusting fingernails.
"And generally speaking a really unappetising piece of work. And a coward to boot and very, very greedy."
The Hobbit will be divided into two parts and released as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14, 2012, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 13, 2013.
Andy Serkis has said that the first trailer for The Hobbit will be released before the end of this month. Watch video here: www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a356330/stephen-fry-on-the-hobbit-peter-jackson-had-me-eating-testicles.htmlvia @britsunited

The Hobbit Trailer Officially Attached to Tintin in the US (But What About the UK?)
Warner Bros. have just announced on via their Twitter account that The Hobbit Trailer for An Unexpected Journey will sit in front of Tintin when it hits the US on the 21st December which is all well and good but the question I have is when will we be seeing it in the UK? Most likely, it’ll hit the interwebs before that date but selfishly (and just like everyone else!), I want to see it! We’ll keep you informed if we get any further info but for now, we know it’s coming and I cannot wait to see it!!! (did I say that already?!)
The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey will be with us in the UK 13th December 2012 which, I’m pleased to report is a week before the US! YAY! www.heyuguys.co.uk/2011/12/16/the-hobbit-trailer-officially-attached-to-tintin-in-the-us-but-what-about-the-uk/
